The Pacific Tigers, shown above wearing the SD Windsor Polo in Mandarin, earned the No. 12 seed in the regional play for a berth in the NCAA Championships.

"I think we have a good chance in the regional" said head coach Brandon Goethals. "Going to Pullman instead of Arizona State was a bit of a surprise, but I like the teams we are facing. This will be a huge week for us and we just have to play our game. I think we are good enough and have the talent to shock some people. Now we just have to go out there and prove it."

Congratulations to SD pro Ed Loar on his 2nd Web.com Tour Victory this past weekend at the 2013 Chitimacha Louisiana Open. Loar took home the win with a 2 shot lead over fellow Oklahoma State alum Morgan Hoffmann. “I’m just playing great right now. We all know it’s a crazy game," said Loar. "When I get out there now I feel like I know what I’m doing. You just have to ride it as long as you can.

Sunday, November 11th: Day 2 Straight Down Fall Classic
Sunday morning was all blue skies and made for a perfect day of golf to host as our last day of the tournament. With the top spot on the leader board constantly changing, viewers were left in suspense all afternoon. After being in a 5-way tie at 10-under, including their final-round foursome mates Ricky Barnes and Andrew Medley, the team of Heyn-Segal managed to separate themselves with a birdie on 18. That birdie landed them in a tie for first with Fred Couples and Brad Shaw. After Corby Segal sunk the team's putt for par on the first hole of the playoff, he and partner Scott Heyn defeated Fred Couples and Brad Shaw to win the 16th Annual Straight Down Fall Classic.

Saturday, November 10th: Day 1 Straight Down Fall Classic

Luckily for everyone, Day 1 of the 2012 Straight Down Fall Classic held no rain although the wind factor was definitely in effect. Even the Straight Down canopies shielding our team were no match for the high winds at times and managed to take out two of them! Despite the wind, competition was high and the leader board changed hands often. By the end of the day, the team comprised of  Gary McCord and Rob Mangini hung on to lead with a gross total of -8. Barnes/Medley and Heyn/Segal were close behind at -7.

Friday, November 9th: The Woody Invitational

Despite the early morning downpour, the players at the Woody Invitational were all smiles throughout the day. The Invitational made for a great practice round for the Pros and their partners teeing off the next day for the start of the Fall Classic, and the local Amateurs paired up with them, all held their own during the day. In the end, the Woody Pro/Am has wrapped up after an exciting playoff. Team 10 made up of Loren Roberts, Mike Rowley, Steven Harding, David Stornetta, and Lee Adams won with a combine score 124. Congratulations!

Thursday, November 8th: The Woody Invitational Pairing Party

San Luis Obispo CC housed the Pairing Party Thursday night, welcoming local Amateurs to draw who their Pro would be in tomorrow's tournament. 

ABOUT THE STRAIGHT DOWN FALL CLASSIC: The Straight Down Fall Classic has been held each November at the San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club in San Luis Obispo, CA since 1997.  The field is comprised of two separate tournaments: The Woody Invitational, held on Friday in memory of Donnie Woodward, brings together local amateur golfers and pros in a four-ball stroke play at scratch with all proceeds benefitting the ALS.  The main event is the Straight Down Fall Classic held Saturday and Sunday. The field is comprised of 59 high caliber teams with one professional and amateur, who meet stringent eligibility requirements, and pay a minimal fee for their participation. Every Professional is teamed with an Amateur of their choosing in a best-ball competition.

STORY BEHIND THE CAUSE: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a disease that has hit too close to home on the Central Coast.
   Commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS, the devastating condition leads to a gradual loss of strength in the arms and legs, fatigue and ultimately severe difficulty in swallowing, speaking and breathing.
    Donnie Woodward, a long-time participant in the Fall Classic who won the event in 2008 with Ed Loar, passed away from ALS in 2010 at the age of 46. Approximately 5,600 people in the United States are diagnosed with ALS each year and Woodward’s tragic story is unfortunately not an isolated case on the Central Coast. Christy French and Martha Fernandez, both friends of the Straight Down family, also contracted the disease. French passed away in September after a remarkable teaching career on the Central Coast while Fernandez continues to fight on in her brave battle with the support of family and friends.
    The local cases only amplify the urgency to discover a cure. Woodward’s loss hit the entire Central Coast sporting world hard, since the vibrant SLO native had been a high school football star and a prominent community member as the owner of Sunset Honda.
   The Fall Classic created the Woody Invitational in his honor, the Friday Pro-Am that includes many of Woodward’s friends and fellow club members. The event and the Fall Classic have helped raise approximately $50,000 for ALS.
   Marshall Williams, who will play all three days at the Fall Classic, was a close friend of Woodward. “Donnie was one of those special guys everybody liked,” he said. “His courage was inspirational and I know lots of his friends are still thinking about him constantly. The Fall Classic is a great time to reflect on how much he meant to so many people.”

Preparations are (and have) been underway for awhile now as our largest event of the season is almost upon us. Our intern from the Cal Poly Golf Team, Kirsten, has been hard at work organizing and pairing the caddies for this year's tournament and she's doing a great job. Tee Times are almost ready so hang in there! They will be posted shortly. 

As for the rest of the crew, Big Red is taking a short detour to the prestigious Virginia Country Club in Long Beach today, but will make it's way back to headquarters tomorrow night. Have to have him clean and ready for next week's festivities!

For those unfamiliar with the Fall Classic Tournament, it's held at San Luis Obispo Country Club in our home base of beautiful San Luis Obispo, CA November 9-11. If the recent heat wave we've been experiencing here in town is any indication, we should be set for some bright and sunny weather, making it a great weekend of golf coming up.  The tournament is open to the public. It is FREE to watch so bring the family and walk the course with the pros. Lunch and soft drinks available on course. 

There are three full days of golf action to enjoy. Friday is home to our annual Woody Golf Tournament which benefits the ALS Association — the United States’ leader in research, patient and community services, public education and advocacy, giving help and hope to those facing the disease. Then, Saturday marks Day 1 of the Fall Classic with split tee times beginning at 8:30 AM. Sunday, Day 2 and the last day of the tournament, begins with split tee times at 8 AM.

Congratulations are in order for Larry Mize. He finished top 10 at this year's inaugural Pacific Links Hawaii Championship at Kapolei Golf Course. Shooting 206 overall (-10), with an impressive 65 in the final round on Sunday, Mize rocketed to T6 on the Leaderboard. This finish marks Mize's third top ten finish of the season and places him 28th in the Charles Schwab Cup Rank.

Streb, 25, started the final round at 11-under in second place and one shot back of Cliff Kresge, but quickly pulled ahead with three birdies in his first six holes. With two more birdies on the front nine and  bogey-free back 9, Streb breezed his way to victory.

"I've gone through spurts where I putted really well and spurts when I hit it really well but I kind of strung it together this week," said Streb, who finished the week T3 in fairways hit and T1 in putting. "I felt like my game was really good today. The putter was working well and I hit a few close which made it a little easier."

At the end of the day, Streb's Mylan Classic win pushed his Web.com season total to $253,491 – more than enough to secure a spot int he top-25, and will no doubt earn his PGA TOUR card for 2013.

Ed made it through sectional qualifying in Columbus, Ohio at Scioto Country Club to make the field for the 2012 US Open. This year's Open will be held June 14-17 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Be sure to keep an eye out for our boy Ed and wish him luck!
