Beating a Hall of Famer to win the final tournament of the year.
Talk about a fantastic finish to 2023.
That’s what Straight Down ambassador Steven Alker did Sunday as he continues his incredible career on PGA Tour Champions.
Alker won the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Sunday at Phoenix Country Club, finishing one shot ahead of four-time major winner Ernie Els and former PLAYERS Championship winner Stephen Ames. Alker’s victory also moved him to second in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup standings, one year after he claimed the top prize on the tour for the world’s best players age 50 and over.
“It's a different vibe, playing with a lot of the legends and the champions of the game, that's been fantastic to get to know them a little bit more, which has been great,” Alker said. “Not just enjoying my golf because I'm playing well, but enjoying my golf because of what I'm wearing, where I'm playing. Just the whole vibe of the Champions Tour has been great. I've really enjoyed it.”
Alker’s renaissance since turning 50 has been an incredible story over the past few seasons. After not winning during his PGA Tour career, he has now won seven times in three seasons on PGA Tour Champions. This year alone, he had two wins and five runner-up finishes. He has finished in the top three in an incredible 45% (24 of 53) career starts on PGA Tour Champions. He won the 2022 Charles Schwab Cup, awarded to the top performer on PGA Tour Champions for the year, over another Hall of Fame member, Padraig Harrington.
Straight Down is proud to play a small part in Alker’s ability to contend week-in and week-out on PGA Tour Champions. It’s an honor for one of the world’s top senior players to choose our products.
“That's what I like about Straight Down gear, is you just have that option to have a bit of fun with it and it's just great to wear,” Alker said. “I feel good in it. They say when you feel good, you play good.”
